Willy Stoltzfus gave his business, Gap Power, its formal name in 1986. But it started long before that, with roots on a family farm near Gap. There in the mid 1970s, Willy’s father, Omar, established an agriculture products manufacturing business. He added Stihl chainsaws and put his son in charge of selling and fixing them. Early on, Willy had one employee and then added another when he had set up the business in its present location on Route 30 in Gap.
Gap Power has grown in many ways since then. Today there are 28 employees serving a customer base that grew right along with the construction industry and the accompanying trend of homeowners needing more power equipment to maintain their lawns and gardens. Rentals are a greater part of the business now, as the concept of rental has expanded and more machines and tools are available for short-term projects.
Gap Power provides more to the business community than equipment and tools – the business is there to help enhance the prosperity of its customers in administrative and educational ways, as well by assisting with contractor’s registration, O.S.H.A. required safety training and other educational items.
How does Gap Power strive for excellence? They stand behind the products and services provided to ensure their customers are always getting the best value. They also nurture a culture where team members are encouraged and enabled to do what is needed to serve customers. Gap Power customers recognize The Gap Power Way – Whatever Is Necessary (W.I.N.) – as the way employees approach meeting needs.
Gap Power also focuses on growing employees in order to enhance the organization. They do this in several ways: through education and aligning team members with opportunities about which they are most passionate; and by enabling team members to master a certain aspect of the business and to take ownership of it. This focus has enabled Gap Power and its customers to weather business downturns.
North Group has supported Gap Power in employee and organizational development:
North Group and Daryl Leisey have focused our attention on strategic leadership and the absolute that we must have the right people in the right places within the organization. Daryl has also assisted the leadership team in discerning where people best fit or if they are a fit at all – even going so far as interviewing prospective team members. – Willy Stoltzfus
