Brian Black

As a Partner at North Group and Legacy Law, an affiliate law firm, Brian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in both leadership and law.  In particular, Brian’s history of estate planning and family business succession planning has created a unique platform for serving family business owners as they plan and execute pivotal ownership and leadership transitions.  Through the process, Brian enjoys facilitating the crucial conversations needed to engage and develop the next generation of leaders to foster successful business transitions.

Brian earned a B.A. in both Chemistry and English at Franklin and Marshall College, and received his J.D. at Villanova University School of Law.  He has practiced law since 1992 beginning at Hartman Underhill & Brubaker, LLP; then as a Partner at James Clark & Black; and until 2012 at Gibbel Kraybill & Hess, LLP.  Before coming to North Group, Brian also served more than four years as Vice President of Resident Support and Resource Development at Brethren Village, a continuing care retirement community.

Brian, along with his Partner and long-time friend Tim Shawaryn, founded Legacy Law in November 2017 to complement his consulting services and fully serve clients in the practice areas of Business Succession Planning, Estate Planning and Charitable Gift Planning.

Currently, Brian serves on the Board of Directors of Lititz Mutual Insurance Company and related companies, and Moravian Manor.  He also has extensive experience on various nonprofit and church-related boards.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Brian’s late wife, Laurie, passed away in 2015.  Now, Brian is enjoying the wonderful gift of a new season of life with his wife, Vegee, whom he married on November 26, 2016.  Brian enjoys walking alongside his children Aaron, Daniel, Adam, Amanda, and stepson, Nick, as they discover their callings in life.  Together with his wife, Vegee, Brian also enjoys travel, dining, bike rides, time on the beach, and leading a small group on Tuesday nights with young millennials.

Things I am pursuing in life:

A life characterized by an ever deeper trust in my Heavenly Father, learning to be still more and to hurry much less.

Most influential person:

My father. His father died when he was four years old and, despite the many challenges he faced without a father, he became an extraordinary father to my sister and me.  He owned and operated a very successful independent insurance agency and transitioned it successfully to his key employee.  He is an example of an exceptional and generous husband, father, grandfather, and business leader with a servant’s heart.

Life lesson:

The greatest times of real transformation in our lives occur in the deep valleys. In these times of challenge, God can do His greatest work in our hearts, growing us deeper in our faith and ability to trust.  And, He is a God of new beginnings, caring for us through each season of our lives.
