Hollinger Services is an accounting services company that serves and partners with small nonprofits and for-profits, providing bookkeeping, payroll and back office services. From the first day of business, owner Marty Hollinger developed servant-leadership as its distinguishing value, making its people and client relationships its strength. She nurtured cultural values of excellence, team, flexibility and integrity.
Having led the firm for 30 years, Marty wanted to retire and needed a succession solution. She was referred to us by another client who understood we could help her while focusing on her main goal – maintaining the company’s current culture of strong customer service and employee care. She wanted to explore paths to new operational leadership and ownership that included possibilities within the organization as well as vetting of opportunities outside it.
More than anything, she wanted to be sure the new owners would continue to care for clients and employees, promising a strong cultural fit and a smooth transition.
We helped the client crystallize the quantitative and qualitative value of her organization. Then we developed a focused path to finding like-minded potential buyers. As the process continued, we affirmed and encouraged the client as she faced the inevitable yet difficult transition from business ownership to a new phase in life.
When we confirmed there were no interested buyers within the company, we developed a new leadership team and began a multi-phased approach to finding a buyer. This included developing and distributing an executive summary, evaluating potential buyers for culture fit, helping the client understand and consider the multiple offers she received, and walking with her and other professionals through closing the deal. Our working relationship was open and transparent, with regular communication throughout.
John Snowden became the new owner and sole proprietor. The client was so pleased with the process, thankful to have found a buyer who is a strong culture fit, and confident that clients and employees would be well taken care of. As an added bonus, she will have the opportunity to continue serving some of her clients as a part-time employee of the new organization.
