Leadership is much like a wardrobe.

When was the last time you wore a tuxedo—or a formal evening gown?

Formal attire can be memorable, strong, elegant, and completely appropriate in the right setting. But most of us would agree that it isn’t the right choice for every occasion.

If you’re heading to a casual coffee meeting, you’d probably choose something more relaxed. If you’re attending a formal gala, that bow tie or evening gown may be exactly right. And if you’re going to a wedding where semi-formal attire is encouraged, you’d likely leave it in the closet.

The point isn’t that formal attire is good or bad. The point is that we understand the setting and adapt accordingly.

Many leaders become attached to a particular style. Some of us naturally lead with decisiveness and action. Others of us naturally lead through collaboration and consensus. Neither approach is inherently better. The challenge is knowing what the moment requires.

Sometimes people need a leader who listens carefully, asks thoughtful questions, and ensures their perspective has been genuinely considered. Other times, they need decisive direction, clarity, and a compelling vision that pushes them beyond what they thought possible.

Neither approach is always right. Both may be exactly what’s needed depending on the person, the team, and the situation.

The real question is this: Can we recognize what others need from us, rather than focus on what we want to bring to them?

Authentic leadership is not about being the same in every situation. It’s about being true to your values while flexible in your approach. The best leaders adapt without losing themselves, providing what the situation requires while remaining grounded in who they are.
